Supermarkets food waste in UK

Been following many threads of supermarkets dumping good food and in date as some 2028 just because a multipack got damaged and they refuse to donate to charities where you pay for costs.
Daily bins packed to the top with perfectly good things that could be sent to charities who are crying out for food but prefer to put it in the bin is a crying shame with all the hunger in the world you can help by raising your voice and stopping good stuff getting wasted.

In Ireland we have the " FOOD CLOUD " where supermarkets offload produce to a hub to get it passed on to charities and food hubs feeding the homeless and without it there would be no mass feeding.

Jan 2026 they have been accused of dumping good food and still nothing is done and stopped replying to emails or phone calls.

The price of food you pay has to come down but only if you do something like email your tds ,papers , news channels etc. Sign the petition to get the ball rolling.

The 'Too Good To Go' app has been around about 2 years where you can buy bags of food for a few quid at it's expiry date, at various large food outlets and some independent local shops.
Also read recently that Lidl has signed up to the Olio scheme where you can register, request and collect similar expiring food for Free (national roll out Dec 2026).

Yes think i joined " Too Good to Go " app on old phone but never got to use and a great way of getting rid of good food and not feeding pigs or bio station.
God forbid but if ww3 started tomorrow will that stop the dumping of good food as rationing and shortfalls of food hits.

I can see a shortage of foods in the near future and climate change and fires having a big hand in it.
 
I don' t see any percentage being taken off, ive had tomatoes turn to pulp the day after buying ,Grapes with mould and Blueberry's already for a smoothie, feckin ridicules
 
Not bought a TGTG bag for a while but my local SPAR sells advised £10 price food bags for £3.30 (label prices usually add up to about £10-14. Mostly, pastries, sandwiches/rolls, loaf of bread, sliced meats, desserts, etc. and most items can be frozen if not eaten on the day of purchase.
 
There's a couple of charities I'm involved with that help feed the homeless and families who are struggling in Liverpool, were we get food through these apps @Oggiman mentioned but now the charities are now getting recognised and alot of major supermarkets and high street shops get in touch with food donations, will add the apps @Oggiman
mentioned below, as they quite helpful and nothing to be ashamed of in some bargain food...

Wife works at M&S, and there are charities that collect the food, sometimes they don't turn up. The staff are then given the option to take food if they want it. She brings home loads, often way too much, but she's like a magpie. I not sure that's how it works at all supermarkets though, but there are charities involved that take the food.
 
If charities were taking the food those bins would not be filled to the top and and reduction to the waste bins is good.
There would be many charities very happy or getting a food parcel by post because he cares. He did show a while ago of bins fully loaded with just meat joints going to waste and must have been thousands of quid and soup kitchens would be in heaven getting that amount..

Good for her as diverting from the waste bin.
Stores need more contact numbers for food collections

Again idk if it's across all places, I can only speak for where I live (Wales) and M&S. I totally agree though that they could be giving the food to others, the problem is, that majority of it is dated, so it's EOS dates, and they could be sued if it went wrong, and someone got ill from eating it. We're moving to a litigatious society

Canned foods and drink cans all in date and less chance of contamination going on.

I have been reading Aldi are now going to donate and take for free to stop it going into the bins. 11 million meals saved and if all the others did the same that amount would be insane.
 
Been following this guy for months and every night at different locations bins filled with 27 and 28 stamped on cans is insane.

Waste Inspectors

Anything he gets like flowers are given to local cafe to help themselves or put on graves.
Food is given to foodbanks and he also does food parcels sent to members/
One friend said he had not eaten for 2 days or had money to buy any and got handed a food parcel.
Beer and wine are donated to church for raffles.

PLEASE CHECK HIM OUT AS YOUR PAYING FOR THAT WASTE.

Poor lad is so overworked and burnt out and now taking a month of to recover and go back out there to see if anything has changed.

He needs the help of the public to check their local bins and video it to show what is getting dumped out.

There was another guy and unsure if in UK OR USA that collects waste veg and fresh fruit by the ton and feeds it to Water Buffalo having saved it to going to landfill. While doing this the animals fertilise the soil and their hooves help the ground to become more fertile and crops can be grown on it. Bad land is becoming farming land.
