Technicians will now be required to take a photo of every car during its MoT test as part of a national rollout of new rules designed to combat fraud.

The rollout of the "Photos at Test" feature began on 3 August following a trial period in 2025 designed to clamp down on the issue of so-called ‘ghost MoTs’. These are defined as when a car is issued an MoT pass either without undergoing a full inspection, or even not turning up for a test in the first place.

MoT technicians will now be required to upload photographs to a central DVSA database using a smartphone or tablet. This will need to show the vehicle on the inspection ramp with its registration plate visible. During a trial at more than 300 of the UK’s over 2,500 garages, employees said taking and uploading the photos had a “minimal” impact on testing times, with a 90 per cent success rate for uploads in the first week.

Head of MoTs at the DVSA, Grant Thunders, said: “Photos at Test will help prevent fraud, provide reassurance to motorists, and protect the reputations of hard working and honest MoT testers across the country.

“This change adds to the range of intelligence and evidence-gathering processes used by DVSA to tackle MoT fraud,” Thunder continued, “and will help us to take action against anyone who attempts to undermine the integrity of the MoT or compromise road safety.”

Don't know about any one else but as i get older when i take my car in i want a decent mot not a dodgy one.
I maintain my cars and motorbikes above and beyond so i dont reallty worry about MOT's, i dont remeber my last faliure.

My son however rolls coal, derve no DPF,EGR or cat hybrid turbo and a map, he knows a man. Rest of his car is spot on i dont condone what he does.

Our cars have always been kept highly maintained although i admit i don't do the work myself. Its not even not being able to do things like that but i usually give work the garages. Mines off in for a medium service in the next couple of weeks at the main dealers because if i have it done at the dealers they put another years warranty on the car and it keeps the hybrid battery warranty valid.

In your situation with the warranty its a no brainer.

My issues are if they do all the work they are supposed to.

A workmate of mine bought a Ford Focus from Car People with it he bought a service plan for the duration of the finance 5 years. He took the car in for its services as per the schedule till the service plan ran out. Then i did a full service for him. The fuel filter and air filter are enclosed in housings. When i removed them in yellow pen they were dated 08/20 that was before he bought the car the airfilter was chocked and the cabin filter had never been done.

I dont trust anyone to service or repair my vehicles. On leaving School i started a apprentiship at a now closed Ford Main Dealer close to us mate you know the one. I know what goes on. Did 2 years there it was joke what they didn't do.
