Drivers can now check real-time fuel costs directly on Google Maps, with ministers tipping the update to save average households around £40 a year
From 8 October, a search for forecourts on the app will display their locations as well as their pricing, using data supplied via the government's Fuel Finder scheme. It is a legal requirement for UK forecourts to add their prices to Fuel Finder within 30 minutes of changing them.
Motorists can now view fuel prices directly on Google Maps, in a development the Government has described as a "game-changer." The announcement comes amid soaring petrol and diesel costs.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero confirmed that the app will display live rates whenever motorists search for a nearby filling station. Officials estimate that this price clarity could save car-owning families roughly £40 every year.
This national rollout comes after diesel hit a record high of 199.18p per litre last Monday, according to RAC figures. That figure broke the previous high set after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Average diesel costs climbed even further to 200.11p per litre by Wednesday, while petrol reached 174.89p per litre.
